Epic Sunrise Engagement Photos in the Colorado Mountains

Some mornings stay with you forever.

Mattie and Austin’s sunrise Rocky Mountain National Park engagement is one of those mornings I’ll never forget.

My alarm went off at 1:30 a.m., and while most of Colorado was still asleep, we were packing hiking gear, headlamps, cameras, and plenty of excitement. We were chasing one of the most spectacular sunrises the Colorado mountains had to offer.

The hike began in complete darkness. It was cold, foggy, and incredibly windy. At times the gusts whipped through our hair so fiercely we could barely see the trail ahead.

And then…

The mountains came alive.

As the sun rose over the peaks, warm golden light broke through the clouds, transforming the entire landscape into something that felt almost unreal. Every early alarm and every step of the hike became worth it.

A Colorado Adventure Engagement at Sunrise

Mattie and Austin envisioned an engagement session that reflected who they truly are—adventurous, laid-back, and deeply connected.

Their bohemian-inspired style fit perfectly against Colorado’s rugged alpine scenery. Together we explored mountain trails, watched the sunrise paint the peaks with golden light, and documented the quiet moments that make an engagement session feel genuine.

These are the kinds of mornings that remind me why I love photographing adventurous couples.

Hiking to One of Colorado’s Most Beautiful Views

Before sunrise, we met at our pre-planned trailhead and reviewed everything one last time. At elevations above 13,000 feet, cell service disappears quickly, so careful planning is always part of the adventure.

As someone who spends countless mornings exploring Colorado’s mountains, I know that the best views often require an early wake-up call and a little extra effort.

The reward?

Wide-open alpine landscapes, crisp mountain air, incredible light, and an unforgettable experience shared together.

Why I Love Photographing Colorado Mountain Engagements

There’s something magical about watching the first light touch the Rocky Mountains.

The quiet.

The fresh mountain air.

The wildlife waking up around us.

The feeling that, for just a few moments, the mountains belong only to the two of you.

It’s those authentic, unscripted moments that inspire me most as a Colorado mountain engagement photographer.

Thank You, Mattie + Austin

Thank you for trusting me to be part of such an incredible adventure.

Thank you for waking up in the middle of the night, embracing the cold, hiking in the dark, and choosing an experience over ordinary engagement photos.

Your willingness to chase adventure made this one of my favorite sunrise sessions, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have documented this chapter of your story.

See Their Wedding Day

After this unforgettable mountain adventure, I had the honor of photographing Mattie and Austin’s beautiful wedding at Spruce Mountain Ranch.

If you’d like to continue following their journey, be sure to explore their wedding day story as well.
