What’s the advantage of having your elopement at a waterfall in Colorado?

With each waterfall you have the chance to slow down, be present, and celebrate your relationship in a sincere way.

There is a good deal of reason why so many couples choose waterfalls when planning a private wedding. Unlike more conventional locations, waterfalls have the ability to produce a setting which seems peaceful, exciting, and entirely free from the usual distractions of daily life. When the water flows over the old rock structures and resonates through the forest, it’s easy to get the impression that you are the only two people in the world.

A waterfall elopement is not just about having a beautiful setting; it’s about arranging an experience. Your day could start with a peaceful sunrise hike through an aspen forest before you get to a remote cascade, or you might make your private vows among the towering evergreens before having a picnic with a view of the mountains. With each waterfall you have the chance to slow down, be present, and celebrate your relationship in a sincere way.

Couples who enjoy hiking, exploring the mountains of Colorado, spending time in the open air, and preferring significant experiences to conventional wedding expectations will find these places especially suitable. Throughout the year, the waterfalls in Colorado take on a uniquely beautiful appearance, which makes them excellent spots for eloping regardless of the season.

Upper East Falls

Hidden Waterfall Near Crested Butte

Known locally as Stupid Falls (also called Upper East Falls), this secluded waterfall is one of Crested Butte’s best-kept secrets. Tucked beneath towering evergreens and surrounded by moss-covered rocks, it feels like stepping into another world. The cascading water, peaceful forest, and intimate atmosphere create an unforgettable setting for adventurous couples looking for something truly unique. While the waterfall has earned an unusual nickname among local kayakers, today it’s better known by photographers and outdoor lovers as one of the area’s most enchanting hidden gems.

Secret Japanese Waterfalls – Crested Butte

Moss-covered boulders, delicate ferns, crystal-clear water, and towering evergreens create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the state.

Tucked away in the mountains surrounding Crested Butte is one of Colorado’s most enchanting hidden gems—a secluded waterfall that feels as though it belongs in the forests of Japan. Moss-covered boulders, delicate ferns, crystal-clear water, and towering evergreens create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the state. The peaceful setting, combined with the gentle sound of cascading water, makes it feel worlds away from the busier hiking destinations that many visitors know.
One of my favorite things about this location is how intimate it feels. Instead of crowds gathering around an overlook, you’ll often find yourself surrounded by nothing but the forest, the creek, and the person you’re about to marry. The soft, filtered light beneath the trees photographs beautifully throughout the day, while the lush greenery creates a timeless, almost magical backdrop.
Because this waterfall is located in a fragile alpine environment, I don’t publicly share its exact location. Keeping places like this protected helps preserve both the landscape and the quiet experience that makes it so special. When couples book with me, I share carefully selected hidden locations based on the season, accessibility, and the type of adventure they’re dreaming of, so they know the booking gives them a personal, secluded, and unforgettable elopement experience.

Copper Falls – Loveland Colorado

Nestled in the scenic Big Thompson Canyon just outside Loveland, Copper Falls offers a unique blend of natural beauty and modern convenience.

Unlike many of Colorado’s remote waterfall locations, Copper Falls combines the romance of cascading water with beautifully maintained grounds, making it an excellent choice for couples who want a mountain-inspired setting without a strenuous hike.
The property’s stunning waterfall serves as a breathtaking backdrop for ceremonies, while the surrounding canyon, towering rock formations, and peaceful river create endless opportunities for portraits. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you or celebrating with a small group of family and friends, Copper Falls provides a setting that feels secluded, elegant, and effortlessly romantic.
One of the biggest advantages of eloping at Copper Falls is its accessibility. Couples can enjoy the beauty of a Colorado waterfall without trekking several miles into the backcountry, making it ideal for those who want to include guests, older family members, or simply prefer a more relaxed adventure. The venue also offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, from lush summer greenery to vibrant autumn colors and snow-dusted canyon walls during the winter months.

Timberline Falls – Rocky Mountain National Park

At over 10,000 feet in elevation, the scenery feels wild, untouched, and unmistakably Colorado.

For couples dreaming of an adventurous alpine elopement, Timberline Falls is one of Rocky Mountain National Park’s most breathtaking destinations. The trail winds past alpine lakes, wildflowers, and towering granite peaks before arriving at a dramatic waterfall cascading through a rugged mountain landscape. At over 10,000 feet in elevation, the scenery feels wild, untouched, and unmistakably Colorado.
The journey to Timberline Falls is part of the experience. Couples who love hiking and exploring together will find the trail just as memorable as the destination itself. Along the way, you’ll pass sparkling streams, panoramic mountain views, and some of the park’s most iconic scenery before reaching the falls, where the sound of rushing water creates an unforgettable setting for portraits and private moments together.
Because Timberline Falls is located within Rocky Mountain National Park, wedding ceremonies are not permitted at the waterfall itself. However, many couples choose to exchange their vows at one of the park’s designated ceremony sites before hiking to Timberline Falls for adventurous portraits. This allows you to experience one of Colorado’s most spectacular waterfalls while respecting the park’s regulations and protecting this fragile alpine environment.

More Epic Colorado Waterfalls

Rifle Falls State Park

While a great many alpine waterfalls provide a rather different kind of experience, Rifle Falls gives a completely different one. Three waterfalls flow down into a rich canyon containing moss-covered rocks, ferns, caves, and thick greenery which is almost tropical in feel. The fact that it is relatively easy to reach also means that it is a very good option for couples who would like beautiful scenery without having to do a long hike.

South Mineral Creek Falls

Situated just outside Silverton, South Mineral Creek Falls is one of the most spectacular places in Colorado for couples getting married at a waterfall. Clear streams flow through the alpine meadows as impressive mountain peaks surround a number of cascading waterfalls, producing one stunning sight after another. In the summer, the valley is covered with bright wildflowers, which is why it’s one of my preferred spots for adventurous couples who are looking for not only amazing scenery but also a feeling of peaceful seclusion.
The sunrise is particularly magical in this place since the first rays of light spread over the mountains and the trails at that time are wonderfully quiet.

Box Canyon Falls

Box Canyon Falls is in the central part of Ouray and has a totally different kind of atmosphere; the rushing water passes through a narrow canyon, producing striking textures, an air filled with mist, and the loud sound of water echoing off the canyon walls. The place has both an intimate and immensely powerful feeling.

Zapata Falls

One of Colorado’s lesser-known gems is located just outside Great Sand Dunes National Park. To get to Zapata Falls one has to do a short hike along a cool mountain creek before the canyon suddenly opens up to show a beautiful waterfall situated within narrow rock walls.

North Clear Creek Falls

For couples who want excellent scenery without having to do a tough hike, North Clear Creek Falls is a great choice. The spectacular waterfall drops into a deep volcanic canyon and as a result is one of the most photographable roadside waterfalls in Colorado.

Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake is one of the most well-known of Colorado’s natural wonders, its vivid turquoise waters and delicate waterfalls appearing almost unreal and thus making it an exceptional spot for portraits.

Since the area is very well protected, the number of visitors is restricted and ceremonies are usually not allowed. The fact remains, though, that a great many couples plan to include a visit to Hanging Lake either before or after their wedding day.

Eloping Near Waterfalls: What does that entail?

Eloping Near a Waterfall: What does that entail?

You are not simply selecting a backdrop; you are choosing an environment that will shape and define your experience. This place becomes a mirror for your journey together, reflecting the depth and uniqueness of your love story. When the setting amplifies your connection, your elopement becomes truly personal and meaningful.
There’s constant motion here, a living energy that sets the stage for everything that follows.
Along with this movement, the sound is loud, steady, and grounding, creating a vibrant backdrop.
The air, too, carries its own signature—it’s cooler, damp, and alive, contributing to the unique ambiance.

Intimate Colorado waterfall elopement at Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride

Bridal Veil Falls – Telluride

Nearly 365 feet of rushing water plunge dramatically down the mountainside,

Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s tallest free-falling waterfall, is one of the state’s most famous attractions; nearly 365 feet of rushing water plunge dramatically down the mountainside, providing an unforgettable backdrop for portraits and private ceremonies.
Many couples choose to spend the day combining a visit to Bridal Veil Falls with an adventure tour of Telluride, whether by taking the gondola or hiking the nearby alpine trails. The scenery around the area is particularly impressive in late summer and when the aspens start to turn into brilliant shades of gold in early fall.

Boulder Falls – Boulder Canyon

Towering rock walls rise on either side of the falls, framed by pine trees and the rugged beauty of the Front Range.

There’s something almost magical about the way Boulder Falls reveals itself. Tucked into the dramatic walls of Boulder Canyon, the water tumbles down a series of smooth, weathered rocks, gathering speed before spilling into the pool below. When the light catches the spray, tiny droplets shimmer through the air, and the entire canyon seems to soften around the sound of rushing water.
Towering rock walls rise on either side of the falls, framed by pine trees and the rugged beauty of the Front Range. The combination of stone, water, forest, and mountain air gives Boulder Falls that unmistakable feeling of being somewhere wild and far away—even though you’re only a short drive from downtown Boulder.
There is something so romantic about standing beside moving water. The rushing falls become the soundtrack to your morning, drowning out everything else for a little while. You can wander along the rocks together, hold hands beneath the trees, soak in the cool mist from the waterfall, and simply take a moment to realize, we’re really doing this—we’re getting married.
And you don’t need to hike for hours to experience it.
A short walk brings you into the canyon and toward the falls, making Boulder Falls a beautiful choice for couples who want the drama of a Colorado waterfall without a strenuous backcountry adventure. It’s especially lovely for couples who want to spend more of their wedding day exploring rather than recovering from a long hike.
I also love the possibilities that open up when Boulder Falls becomes just one part of your day. You can start your morning surrounded by the quiet of the canyon, explore the waterfall together, then continue your adventure toward Flagstaff Mountain, Lost Gulch Overlook, Chautauqua, or another favorite Boulder location. Imagine changing into your wedding attire, wandering through the mountains with no timeline rushing you, stopping whenever the light is beautiful, and letting the day unfold naturally around the two of you.
Because Boulder Falls is a beloved destination, choosing the right time can make all the difference. An early morning or weekday adventure gives you a better chance of experiencing the canyon in its quieter, more peaceful moments. The morning light filtering through the trees can be especially beautiful, illuminating the mist around the falls and creating that soft, dreamy quality I love so much in photographs.
For couples who want their Colorado elopement to feel like an experience rather than a production, Boulder Falls offers something wonderfully simple: the two of you, the mountains, the sound of rushing water, and a little pocket of wild Colorado to call yours for a moment.

Fish Creek Falls, Steamboat Springs

One of the most iconic waterfalls in the area and a beautiful option for couples who want a little adventure woven into their elopement day.

There’s something incredibly romantic about the waterfalls around Steamboat Springs. Up here, the landscape feels wild and wonderfully untamed—dense evergreen forests, mountain trails, rushing creeks, and waterfalls tucked into the Routt National Forest. It’s the kind of setting that makes you feel like you’ve wandered somewhere far away from everything, even though Steamboat Springs is just down the road.
Fish Creek Falls is one of the most iconic waterfalls in the area and a beautiful option for couples who want a little adventure woven into their elopement day. Water pours dramatically down the canyon through towering evergreens and granite cliffs, creating that classic Colorado mountain feeling. The surrounding landscape is especially beautiful in the summer when everything is green and lush, and in the fall when the aspen trees begin turning gold.
For couples who want something more intimate, there are also smaller waterfalls and cascading streams tucked throughout the mountains surrounding Steamboat. I love the idea of building an entire elopement experience around the landscape here—starting with a quiet morning together, hiking through the forest, stopping along the way for photos and little moments, and eventually finding a waterfall where you can slow down and simply enjoy being together.
Steamboat is also an incredible place to turn your waterfall elopement into a full Colorado adventure. After your hike, you could explore the town, soak in natural hot springs, take a scenic drive through the mountains, or find a quiet meadow surrounded by aspens for sunset portraits. Your wedding day can be so much more than simply exchanging vows at one location—it can become an entire experience that tells your story.
And there’s something especially beautiful about the idea of standing beside a rushing waterfall with the person you love, surrounded by nothing but mountains and trees. No elaborate ballroom. No packed timeline. Just the two of you, the sound of water moving through the canyon, and an entire Colorado landscape unfolding around you.
For couples dreaming of a Steamboat Springs waterfall elopement that feels adventurous, intimate, and connected to nature, this corner of Colorado is pretty hard to beat.

And Sometimes, the Waterfall Finds You

One of my favorite things about Colorado waterfall elopements is that not every waterfall has a name.

Depending on the winter snowpack and how quickly that snow melts in the spring and early summer, waterfalls can suddenly appear all across the Colorado mountains. A trail you may have hiked before can look completely different when the snowmelt is rushing down the mountainsides, creating temporary cascades, little mountain waterfalls, and streams tumbling over rocks that may be completely dry later in the season.
And sometimes, those unexpected waterfalls become part of your elopement day.
You might be hiking toward an alpine lake, wandering through an aspen grove, or making your way along a quiet mountain trail when suddenly you hear the sound of rushing water. You round a bend and there it is—a waterfall spilling down the mountainside, surrounded by wildflowers, evergreens, and fresh green growth.
Those are the moments I absolutely love.
They aren’t always something you can plan for or find on a map. They’re part of the magic of exploring Colorado, and one of the reasons I leave room for spontaneity during an adventure elopement. Snowpack, recent weather, and the time of year can completely change the landscape, so your day may hold little surprises that weren’t there the last time someone visited.
And honestly, that’s part of what makes an adventure an adventure.
We don’t have to know exactly what every moment will look like. We just have to leave enough room to stop when something beautiful catches our attention.
Because sometimes the best waterfall of your Colorado elopement isn’t the one we planned to find.
It’s the one we discover together.

St. Mary’s Glacier – Where Snowmelt Creates Wild Waterfalls

Those unexpected moments are often the ones you’ll remember most.

St. Mary’s Glacier is one of those places that reminds you just how alive the Colorado mountains can be. The landscape changes with the seasons, and when the winter snowpack begins to melt, water starts finding its way down the mountain in countless little cascades and rushing streams.
While St. Mary’s is best known for its glacier and alpine lake, the surrounding landscape can also come alive with seasonal waterfalls created by snowmelt. Depending on the year, the amount of winter snow, and when you visit, you may find water rushing down rocky slopes, spilling beneath the trail, or creating unexpected cascades throughout the surrounding landscape.
And that unpredictability is exactly what I love about it.
You might arrive expecting to photograph the glacier and lake and discover that the mountain has created something completely different that day. A quiet cascade tucked among the rocks. Fresh snowmelt rushing through the forest. Water tumbling down the mountainside as you make your way toward the lake.
For couples planning a St. Mary’s Glacier elopement, this makes the experience feel less like visiting a single landmark and more like exploring an ever-changing mountain landscape together.
The best part is that we don’t have to force the day into a predetermined checklist. We can follow the conditions, take our time, stop when we find beautiful pockets of water and light, and let the mountain decide what it wants to show us.
Snowpack makes a huge difference here. A particularly snowy winter can mean stronger runoff and more dramatic seasonal waterfalls, while a lighter snow year may create a completely different experience. That’s part of the beauty of planning a Colorado adventure elopement—the landscape isn’t always the same twice.
And sometimes, the waterfall you remember from your wedding day isn’t a famous waterfall with a name.
It’s simply the little cascade you discovered together while exploring St. Mary’s Glacier.
Those unexpected moments are often the ones you’ll remember most.

Frequently Asked

What is the best time for a waterfall elopement?
Since each season provides a completely different kind of experience, there is actually no wrong time for planning your waterfall elopement.
The waterfalls in Colorado are at their most impressive during the spring, since the melting snow causes huge quantities of water to flow down the mountain cliffs and at the same time the forests start to become thick and green. Even though certain roads at higher elevations might still be closed, the waterfalls at lower elevations are magnificent.
In the summer the weather is warm, there are hiking routes that are easy to access, a variety of wildflowers bloom and the days are long. It is the season most favoured by couples who wish to reach alpine areas that are still covered with snow at the beginning of the year. Usually I suggest that the ceremonies should take place at sunrise so that the cooler temperatures and the smaller number of people can be enjoyed.
I prefer the autumn season for waterfall elopements since the golden aspens surround the rushing waterfalls and the clear mountain air together with the vivid blue skies produce a scenery that is truly unforgettable. The peak of the colour change typically occurs from mid-September to early October, which is why it is one of the most romantic times of the year to exchange vows.
Many waterfalls become frozen works of art in the winter, and the result is a kind of beauty that is entirely different thanks to the cascading ice, the forests covered with snow, and the quiet trails. For someone who wants a cozy winter adventure with a lot of privacy, a frozen waterfall provides an excellent background.

Permits are needed at many of the waterfalls in Colorado if ceremonies are to be held, if professional photographs are taken, or if both are desired. The requirements depend on which agency manages the site—the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, or the local counties.
The good thing is that there’s no need for you to work it out by yourself. I will help each couple to find out precisely what permits are needed, provide assistance with the application process if necessary, and make sure that we’re complying with all local regulations and the Leave No Trace principles. Once you’re ready to proceed, I’ll also help you with understanding the following steps regarding booking your waterfall elopement. If you’re ready to get started, please contact me and we can begin by looking at the permits and the next steps.

A question that is very often asked by couples is what kind of clothes to wear when having a waterfall elopement, since at many of the locations hiking or walking on uneven ground is involved, comfort is just as important as style.
Dresses flow well in photographs against waterfalls and hiking boots tend to prove to be one of your best companions on the way to your ceremony site. It is common for brides to hike around in their boots before switching into their wedding shoes for the portraits, and cozy layers, wool socks and lightweight jackets all help people to remain comfortable during the day.
The finest clothing allows you to move about freely, stay warm, and properly enjoy the adventure.

Planning a elopement at a waterfall is a bit unlike preparing for a conventional wedding, which is just one of the exciting aspects of the experience. I always advise taking a lot of water, some snacks, several layers, hiking boots, sunscreen, insect repellent, a rain jacket, a headlamp, and your vow books. If the place and the season mean anything, you might also want to bring an extra pair of socks or a small towel once you’ve crossed the streams.
Each couple is given a tailored packing list according to the particular waterfall they are visiting, the length of their hike, and the time of year, ensuring that you know precisely what to take with you. Once you’re ready to book, I’ll guide you through the following steps and help make sure you’re all set from the very beginning. So if you’re ready to proceed, just send me a message and we can start planning your waterfall elopement.

Picture starting your day before sunrise, joining up at the trailhead as the mountains gradually come to life around you. As you hike through the quiet forests, the first rays of light will begin to shine on the surrounding hills. When you get to the waterfall, you’ll have a private first glimpse of it before exchanging your heartfelt promises by the rushing water.
Following the ceremony, we’ll take a walk around the area, take some beautiful portraits, and then celebrate with champagne and a picnic breakfast in the mountains. Should you wish to have a full day of adventure, we can keep exploring the alpine lakes, the scenic mountain passes, the nearby waterfalls, or the charming mountain towns in Colorado before finishing the day with an unforgettable sunset. If you’re ready to plan your Colorado waterfall elopement, I would be happy to help you arrange a day that is as meaningful as it is beautiful. If this kind of day sounds like something you’d like, please get in touch and let’s plan your Colorado waterfall elopement.

My aim goes beyond just recording your wedding day since I also want to help make an experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your lives, taking in every laugh, every quiet moment, every stunning landscape, and all the emotions encountered along the way.

Is it legally possible to get married at a waterfall?
Certainly. At numerous places with waterfalls it is possible to have private ceremonies provided that you obtain the necessary permits. I can assist you in finding out precisely what is required for the site you have picked.

Are waterfall hikes difficult?
Each place is different since some waterfalls can be reached in just a five-minute walk whereas others demand several miles of hiking. We’ll select a spot that suits your level of comfort and your preferred kind of adventure.

What will happen if it rains?
Beautiful photographs of waterfalls often occur when it is light rain or misty. Since the weather in Colorado changes rapidly, I make sure to include some flexibility in your schedule when preparing backup plans if necessary.

Can we bring our dog?
Right! Many of the waterfall sites in the National Forests are suitable for dogs and therefore allow your four-legged family member to take part in your adventure.
