Marissa + Nick | Colorado Mountain Engagement Adventure

Some love stories begin quietly.

Others involve a road trip from Wyoming, a secret proposal, an Old English Sheepdog named Blu Bear, and a dog tag with one very important question:

Will you marry Nick?

Marissa and Nick’s story has everything I love about photographing adventurous couples—connection, family, faith, a little bit of chaos, and two people who were willing to take a chance on each other.

For their Estes Park engagement photography session, we headed into the mountains for an adventure along Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, surrounded by expansive alpine views, dramatic mountain landscapes, and the kind of wild Colorado scenery that makes you want to slow down and take it all in.

But before we wandered through the mountains together, there was a pretty incredible love story to tell.

Their Love Story

Nick and Marissa met in October 2015.

Their first date was at Rock Bottom on Denver’s 16th Street Mall. Nick had driven all the way from Wyoming to meet Marissa, and both of them were nervous. They had never officially met in person before that day.

Sometimes, the biggest adventures begin with simply taking a chance.

Thankfully, they did.

As their relationship grew, they fell in love not only with each other but also with God. Their faith became an important part of their relationship, and in August 2016, they were baptized together.

About a year and a half into their relationship, Nick knew Marissa was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

There was just one important conversation to have first.

He needed to ask her dad.

Nick and Marissa’s dad, Vince, went to lunch together. Vince had one request for his future son-in-law:

Their future children’s AFC football team had to be the Denver Broncos.

Nick agreed.

Sort of.

The Perfectly Imperfect Proposal

On April 8, 2017, Marissa thought she was simply taking a break from studying to get some fresh air.

She had no idea a proposal was waiting for her on the trail.

Earlier that day, Marissa’s brother Andrew and Nick went to scout the location. On the way home, Andrew even got a flat tire.

The entire day seemed determined to make their secret proposal as complicated as possible.

Then there was Blu Bear.

Nick had originally planned for Blu to join him and Marissa’s dad, but Marissa unknowingly changed the plan when she decided she wanted to go to the store with them.

So Nick quickly redirected Andrew and had him pick up Blu from Marissa’s house.

Meanwhile, Andrew was waiting on the trail, getting increasingly sunburned while trying to keep the surprise alive.

Eventually, Nick and Marissa began their hike.

Marissa still had absolutely no idea.

Halfway along the trail, Nick casually pointed ahead.

“Oh look! An Old English Sheepdog.”

Marissa immediately ran toward the dog.

She knew it was Blu Bear.

But when she looked at his tag, something seemed different.

It wasn’t his normal tag.

She was confused and initially assumed it must belong to another dog.

Nick encouraged her to look again.

“Well, what’s the dog’s name then?”

Marissa read the tag.

“Will you marry Nick?”

She was completely shocked.

Then she turned around.

Nick was down on one knee, ring in hand.

“Well, Ms. Lombardi, the time has finally come. Will you marry me?”

Marissa was shaking uncontrollably.

And without hesitation, she said yes.

A Proposal Surrounded by the People They Love

What made the proposal even more meaningful was that the people Marissa loved most were part of the surprise.

Her dad.

Her brother.

And, of course, Blu Bear.

She immediately called her sister and mom to tell them what had happened.

Then came the wedding planning.

On the drive home, Marissa and Nick called his parents. Nick’s mom, Kim, gave Marissa a moment she would never forget:

“Welcome to the family. We are so excited for you two!”

One question had changed everything.

Now they were beginning a new chapter together—one filled with wedding plans, family, faith, and the excitement of making a lifelong promise to one another.

For their engagement session, we took their story into the Colorado mountains.

Rocky Mountain National Park was the perfect setting.

We explored along Trail Ridge Road, surrounded by high-alpine landscapes and sweeping views that seemed to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

And rather than turning their engagement session into a series of perfectly posed portraits, we let the experience unfold naturally.

Because that’s how I believe engagement photography should feel.

Move.

Explore.

Laugh.

Hold hands.

Get a little windblown.

Stop when the view takes your breath away.

Let yourselves forget that you’re being photographed.

The best photographs often happen in those in-between moments.

The way he reaches for your hand.

The laugh that happens when neither of you expects it.

The quiet glance between two people who already know they’re building a life together.

Those are the moments I want to preserve.

There is something unforgettable about photographing an engagement session in the high country.

The landscape becomes part of the story.

The wind moves through your hair. Clouds roll across the peaks. Sunlight shifts across the mountains. You walk together, pause for a view, and experience something that belongs entirely to the two of you.
